As a follow-up to Review Roundup, "HP ProLiant DL585" (October 2005, InstantDoc ID 47682), I reviewed the new dual-core version of the HP ProLiant DL585. The rugged 132-pound, 4U rack-mounted server I tested boasts four AMD 880 Opteron dual-core 2.4GHz CPUs, 2GB of RAM, and a battery-backed embedded Ultra3 Smart Array 5i drive connected to four 36GB, 15,000rpm hard disks. It supports a maximum of 128GB of RAM.

You can purchase the DL585 with 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 2003 editions. Other options include VMware ESX Server, and Novell and Red Hat versions of Linux.

The DL585's processors are on plug-in cards. Because the server uses a HyperTransport bus, each CPU has its own integrated memory controller and directly addresses its own RAM, which speeds communication between integrated circuits.

The server comes with HP Systems Insight Manager and Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) management technology for systems monitoring and management. I found it difficult to create a workload that stressed the DL585. If you're looking for a rack-mounted enterprise-class server, you can't go wrong with the ProLiant DL585. The system's 4-way dual-core Opteron configuration provides incredible performance.

Summary HP ProLiant DL585

4-1/2 out of five

Starts at $10,905, including two 2.6GHz AMD 852 Opteron processors, 2GB of RAM, and two 1GB Ethernet adapters.
